Walsall 4 - 14 Warley (26th Nov 09)
This game got better with each quarter. Warley took the lead with goals from Sue Strudley and Cally Parsonage without reply from Walsall. The pace improved and Warley scored three goals in the 2nd, five in the 3rd and four in the last quarter. Casey Lee and Tasha Egan both gave good displays of the more difficult push-shot. Keeping Walsall's goal tally to just 4 goals was due to some splendid defending from Nicola Peniket, Cally P, Vicki Hawkins and some great saves from Danielle Iles.
Other scorers for Warley were Casey (3), Hayley Bird (2), Sue (5), Vicki Hawkins (2) and Cally (2).
Next game: Warley v L'boro, Wed 2nd Dec, 8.45pm

Boldmere 19 v 16 Warley (24th Nov 09)
Warley Juniors got their season off to a promising start at Boldmere last night. Warley were 6 - 3 up in the first quarter and in open play were the better team. In the 1st quarter each team was awarded a major and both teams scored from them. However, this equality did not continue as Boldmere were fortunate to be awarded 3 penalties, 7 majors and one Warley player dressing roomed, resulting in ten of their goals scored. Warley were given 2 penalties and two unconverted majors. So, in open play Warley scored 14 against Boldmere's 9. Not bad, considering George Wibberley, Sam Curruthers, Connor Jukes and Jack Roper all made promising debuts. It was great effort, by a team that has not had much opportunity to gel together yet. Rory Edwards and Max Peters both returned to polo after a long break, but seemed to have improved despite it. Robby Williams played well in goal and gave some good passes to the outfield players. Roger Kennedy played the pit excellently, scoring 7 goals and Ollie Jackson worked tirelessly offering support and scored an unbelieveable lob from the wing. But man-of-the match was Graham Harrington (Captain) who seemed to pop up in every position in the pool, just when needed and scored 8 goals.
Next game: HGSOB v Warley, Friday 4th Dec, 8.30pm start.

Warley 27 v 1 Newport (25th Nov 09)
Warley dominated play from start to finish with all the players scoring, apart from Warley's elegant play-maker Chris Carty. Newport, despite having five man-ups, just couldn't put the ball past Warley's goalkeepers John Halstead and Robby Williams. That is, until in the final seconds of the game Mike Jukes deflected a Newport shot past the awaiting hands of Phil Croft. Scorers for Warley were Will M (2), Phil C (3), Richard C (4), Robby W (3), Glynn S (1), Graham H (2), Gaz C (3), Roger K (4) and Mike J (1, plus an own goal).
Next game: Warley v Newport, Wed, 25th Nov, 8.45pm
Warley 24 v 7 HGSOB (11th Nov 09)
Scorers for Warley were Nick Covington (1), Robby Williams (2), Richard Cox (5), Philip Croft (4), Ollie Jackson (2), Roger Kennedy (6), Graham Harrington (1), Mitch Poulton (1) and Glynn Sheppard (1)

Venue: Walsall FINAL Tournament 14/15 Nov 2009
To avoid being in the "Div 3/4 Play-Off" Warley needed to beat league leaders Hucknall (on Sat) and South Derbyshire (on Sun) and rely on Swindon not getting a point against City of Birmingham and bottom placed Solihull.
Saturday: The weekend started with CoB beating Swindon 14 - 10. In the third tournament Hucknall had beaten Warley 8 - 14, but the game had been close up until the last quarter. Could Warley keep the dream alive by beating undefeated Hucknall? At half-time Hucknall led 7 - 5. However, this time Hucknall faltered in the second half, only scoring three goals while Adam Whitehall (3), Graham Harrington (1) and Nick Covington (2) scored for Warley to win an absolutely incredible match, 10 - 11. This was certainly Warley's best performance of the season and made one wonder why they were in such a precarious position.
|
Sunday: Solihull having obtained their first points of the season the previous day now doubled their points for the season by beating Swindon 15 - 10. Warley's hope of finishing above Swindon was now in their own hands. Beat Derbyshire and Swindon would drop into the play-off place.
Warley had beaten Derby at Pond's Forge 15 - 14. The score shows that it was a close match, but Warley had led 14 - 10 and 15 - 12 with less than 2 minutes left. Could Warley produce a repeat performance? The game started poorly for Warley who found themselves 3 - 0 down in the first two minutes. At half-time Warley trailed 9 - 6. At the end of the third Derby still held their three goal advantage, 13 - 10. Despite a big effort on Warley's part they were unable to achieve the standard of play they had shown against Hucknall and failed to bridge the three goal gap. Derby winning 15 - 12.

Warley 25 - 7 Nottingham (17th Sept 09)
Warley completed their season, already acclaimed as CHAMPIONS, with an elegant display of attacking polo against a physically strong Nottingham side. Having struggled to beat Nottingham in the away fixture (14 - 11 down in the last quarter, eventually winning 14 -15), Warley made few mistakes this time. Alex Parsonage, on his return from Lugano (European B Championships), turned goal provider in the first quarter, with four assists leading to two goals each for Warley's Youth internationals Graham Harrington and Roger Kennedy. Five - one up Warley continued to score at will in each of the remaining quarters, winning them 4 - 2, 9 - 3, and finally 7 - 1.
Scorers for Warley were: Roger K (4), Graham H (5), Max Gerasimov (1), Dave Lane (1) Norman Stephens (2), Alex P (7), Paul Martin (2) and John Pridden (3).

Warley 21 v 4 Aston (30th Sept 09)
Warley completed their season as unbeaten Champions!!
In addition, having the best record of all three divisions, they won the Memorial Trophy.
Aston took the lead after just one minute, but it was the only time they were in front. While Aston could only manage one goal per quarter, Warley scored 4 in the first, then 5, 8 and finally 4 in the last quarter, to win with ease. Next year, however, will prove to be a tougher test , but this present side has the talent to finish in the top half of Division Two.
Scorers for Warley were Graham Harrington (5), Philip Croft (4), Edward Smart (3), Norman Stephens (1), Roger Kennedy (5), Robby Williams (2) and an own goal by Aston.

Champions for the second year running and winners in four out of the last six years, Warley Ladies can feel justifiably proud of themselves. However, the result came as a little of an anti-climax. The team thought that the title would be won by whoever won the final game of the season against local rivals Walsall. Gearing themselves up to this final encounter they were somewhat disappointed, but partly relieved, when Walsall rang up less than four hours before the game was due to start to say they couldn't raise a team at their pool!!
Not only that, a glut of non-fulfilments meant Warley had already won the title and didn't even need to beat Walsall, who had slumped to sixth place. All that worry & tension!!
Vicki Hawkins had the best scoring record in the league, scoring 52 goals in 8 matches, an average of 6.5 goals per game. Major queen for Warley, Maddison York 9 in 10 games.
